Boost your business visibility with Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
You’ve probably heard the term Search Engine Optimization (usually referred to as SEO) and know it has some connection with getting customers, but maybe you aren’t sure how it works or how to get it.
While SEO can be complex and technical, it’s more accessible than you think, and it can significantly increase your business’s online visibility.
The basics of SEO
Simply put, SEO is the process of improving your site in a way that increases its visibility and ranking on search engines. The better visibility your pages have in search results, the more likely you are to attract prospects and existing customers to your business.
This process is often called organic SEO because the results are a function of how the search engines “naturally” produce results. Unlike paid search ads, you can’t pay search engines to get higher organic search rankings.
Did I mention it’s a process? SEO is not a one and done exercise that produces immediate results, but is a series of techniques, applied both to your web pages and off, some of which must be nurtured over time to see results.
How much time and the degree of results also depends on fluctuations in markets, the intensity of your competition, and ever-changing search engine algorithms. On average you’ll likely start seeing results within 3-6 months.
How does SEO work?
How do search engines decide who comes first? Second? The internet is like a giant library of information and search engines are the ultimate librarians. Aside from knowing where to access a specific topic at any given time, these “librarians” have read and cataloged the information from every “book” or webpage.
As they read and index each webpage, search engines compare the information with similar pages. The information they deem to be the best and most relevant to the search term is then ranked first.
That’s why when you search for something specific, search engines will show you the best information based on what you’re looking for.
Some important ranking factors for your website include:
- Responsive design (mobile friendly)
- Quality content
- Authority (i.e., backlinks, reviews, comments)
- Ease-of-access and security (i.e., page speed, SSL, and other technical aspects)
There are others, but these factors are key for higher ranking in the search results.
Why SEO is still important
As long as people turn to the internet to solve problems, answer questions, and find options, SEO will be necessary. Especially as a marketing component for your business.
Whether it’s Google, Bing, or Yahoo, people rely on search engines to find information, buy products and services, and generally make their lives easier for both work and play.
Google alone processes 3.9 billion searches per day. On average, that’s 40,000 search queries per second.
In terms of buying potential, 90% of search respondents said they were likely to click on the links in the first page of results.
What’s more, is the respondents of the same study said if they didn’t find what they were looking for on the first page, they’d change their query or search term instead of clicking on the next page of search results.
That tells us that consumers not only rely on search engines to find solutions, but they only trust what they see on that first page.
How SEO grows your business
So how does SEO help your business in the long run?
In my earlier post regarding three ways to boost your business in 2021, I talked about re-engaging with your customers, clients, and community through SEO.
When you apply SEO principles to your website, or if an expert does it for you, you’re giving your business a better chance at attracting the right clients and customers.
According to Hubspot’s Sales Perception Survey, 62% of consumers use a search engine when they want to learn about a new business. 41% use a search engine when they’re ready to buy.
The purpose might be different, but whether someone is searching for their own personal need or business, the way we find and consume information remains the same.
Want your business to be considered during a customer’s research process? Apply SEO methods that allow your website to be search engine-friendly.
In short, boosting your business website’s SEO:
- Harnesses the power of organic search (the primary source of web traffic)
- Builds trust in a company
- Links businesses to customers on the most popular platform for information consumption
Optimizing your website to rank higher in search results should be a consistent part of your digital marketing strategy.
Where to start with SEO
The best part of SEO is that you can start at any time, but ideally, you’ll want to develop an SEO strategy at the outset of building your website or redesigning one.
You could learn how to do it yourself, but like most business owners, your time is spread thin. The value of expert help is well worth the expense.
